It depends on the number and type of bins you're storing. A standard 240 litre wheelie bin takes up far less space than a 1100 litre commercial container. Each shelter in our range is available in various sizes, so be sure to choose an option suitable for your requirements.

You should also allow enough clearance for the lids to open fully and for bins to be easily wheeled out on collection day. In tight spaces, placing the shelter against a wall or fence can save a surprising amount of room.

A shelter is a permanent structure, so a little groundwork goes a long way:

Base: Most shelters are fixed to a level, solid surface such as concrete or tarmac, which you may need to lay first.
Collection Route: Position the shelter where the waste crew can reach it easily, avoiding steps or long distances to wheel bins.
Distance from Buildings: Keeping bins away from windows, doorways, and building lines helps reduce odours and fire risk.
Planning Permission: You may need approval in conservation areas, near listed buildings, or if the shelter is visible from the street.
Drainage: A surface that can be hosed down and drains freely helps maintain hygiene and makes cleaning easier.
