Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a Sheffield stand and a toast rack?

A Sheffield stand is a single inverted U-shape that holds two bikes, one on each side. Its height allows both the frame and a wheel to be locked, which aligns with most UK cycle parking guidance.

Toast racks connect multiple stands on a shared base, so a row of parking arrives as one unit instead of separate posts. This makes installation quicker and ensures consistent spacing along the row.

How many bike stands do I need?

Calculate two bikes per Sheffield stand and allow for the space each one requires. Stands are typically spaced about a metre apart, as tighter spacing makes it awkward to use both sides and effectively halves your capacity. Also, leave approximately two metres of clear space in front of a row so bikes can be wheeled in and out without clashing.

For a more robust option, our cycle shelters provide protection from the elements.

Do you install bike racks and stands?

Yes, but the process depends on the product, as fixing requirements vary between root fixed and bolt down models. Our professional installation team operates in South East England, including London, Essex, Kent, Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, and the wider Home Counties. Other areas of the UK can be arranged through our network of trusted subcontractors.

Contact our team to discuss your site's specific needs.

What should be considered before installing cycle stands?

Most stands are straightforward to fit, though the fixing method depends on the surface:

  • Root Fixed: Installed by concreting into the ground for maximum strength, suitable for new or soft surfaces.
  • Baseplate Fixed: Bolted down onto existing concrete or tarmac, offering quicker installation and easier relocation.

Additional considerations include:

  • Location: Place stands near an entrance and in view of occupied windows, as overlooked parking is less likely to be targeted by thieves.
  • Accessibility: A low tapping rail helps visually impaired pedestrians detect the stand and some councils require one at each end of a row.
  • Underground Services: We will conduct a cable avoidance (CAT) scan before digging for root fixed stands.
