Frequently Asked Questions

How do anti-terror bollards work?

Anti-terror bollards absorb and resist the force of a vehicle impact, stopping it before it can reach the protected area. Each bollard is made from heavy-duty steel and set into a reinforced foundation designed to withstand extreme loads.

They come in static and automatic versions. Static models remain in place permanently, while automatic counter-terror bollards can be raised and lowered using a key fob. This allows busy businesses to switch between open and restricted access throughout the day without sacrificing security.

How strong are anti-terror bollards?

Strength varies by model, ranging from stopping a standard car at 30mph to halting a lorry. You can assess a bollard's strength by checking its crash rating, such as a PAS 68 or K rating. These indicate the vehicle weight and speed the bollard has been tested against.

Our guide to the purposes of anti-terrorism bollards provides more details on these ratings.

Where are anti-terror bollards used?

Hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) bollards are used in any location where a vehicle attack could endanger lives or critical infrastructure. Common places include:

  • Government and public buildings
  • Stadiums and event venues
  • Commercial premises
  • Town centres and pedestrian zones

Do you install anti-terror bollards?

Yes. We offer a professional installation service across South East England, including London, Essex, Kent, Hertfordshire, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, and the wider Home Counties. Installation in other parts of the UK can be arranged through our network of trusted subcontractors – so just get in touch if you're outside this area.

During checkout, you will be asked to enter your postcode to confirm if installation is available in your area. For help choosing the right rating for your site, contact our team.

What does anti-terror bollard installation require?

Anti-terror bollards require significantly more groundwork than standard security posts. Key considerations include:

  • Site Survey: An assessment of vehicle approach routes, speeds, and ground conditions is necessary before installation begins.
  • Tested Foundations: The foundation must match the design used in crash testing to ensure the bollard achieves its rating.
  • Underground Services: Pipes and cables can restrict placement, so they must be located and possibly rerouted.
  • Power and Drainage: Automatic models also require an electrical supply and effective drainage.
  • Permissions: Sites on or near public highways may need approval from the local council.
