The Latest Vehicle Theft Statistics in the UK

Thief trying to get into a car

Vehicle theft remains a persistent issue for drivers and homeowners in the UK. Recent statistics indicate that this type of crime has reached concerning levels not seen in over 15 years.

By reviewing the latest theft figures and trends, drivers can better understand the risks and take appropriate precautions.

Overview of Vehicle Theft in the UK

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), between April 2023 and March 2024 there were 129,159 vehicles stolen in the UK. This is only marginally lower than the 130,119 vehicles stolen in the previous 12 month period between April 2022 and March 2023.

These statistics show that after a period of decline, vehicle thefts in the UK have risen sharply since 2015 and continue to remain at high levels not seen since 2007. The plateauing of the numbers indicates vehicle theft is not significantly decreasing.

Other types of vehicle-related crimes have also gone up. Incidents of tampering and parts theft from vehicles rose 2% to 53,369 reported cases. Catalytic converter thefts have surged over the past few years as well. Attempted vehicle thefts continue to be a problem too, creating hassles for drivers even if the criminals are ultimately unsuccessful in stealing the car.

How Thieves Steal Vehicles in the UK

The tactics deployed by criminals to steal cars, vans, trucks, and motorbikes continue to evolve:

  • Thieves use electronic signal amplification to boost key fob signals, unlocking and starting keyless vehicles remotely.
  • Cloned keys and fobs are increasingly made using stolen code data or 3D imaging, enabling blank keys to be programmed for theft.
  • Older vehicles remain vulnerable to forced entry using slim jims or lock picks for silent access.
  • Hot-wiring ignition cylinders or bypassing starter wiring is still used on older models.
  • Ignition barrels are drilled out and replaced quickly on some vehicles to gain access.
  • Towing scams trick drivers into surrendering vehicles using fake fines and threats.

Protecting Your Vehicle from Theft

While vehicle theft remains stubbornly persistent, drivers can take proactive precautions to minimise their risks and help deter thieves:

At Home

  • Install motion sensor security spotlights on garages.
  • Park vehicles in garages if possible, or close to your home in view of windows.
  • Use wheel clamps, steering wheel locks, brake locks.
  • Invest in a car alarm system. Alarms attract attention and make thefts harder.
  • Add CCTV cameras covering driveway and vehicle parking areas.
  • Keep key fobs in signal blocking bags or boxes at night.
  • Get VIN etching on all window glass.
  • Install security posts around driveway entrances.

Installing security bollards around your driveway can not only prevent theft, but may also lower your car insurance premiums due to the added deterrent they provide.

On the Road

  • Always lock doors and close windows when leaving the vehicle.
  • Completely close sunroofs and remove valuables.
  • Park in busy, well-lit areas rather than dark isolated spots.
  • Use deterrent devices like steering wheel locks and brake pedal locks.
  • Enable any antitheft tracking and recovery systems.
  • If parking for extended periods, consider using wheel clamps.
