Bollard Lock Not Turning? How to Fix a Stuck Bollard Lock

Most telescopic, removable, and fold-down bollards operate using a lock system. When the key won’t turn, it’s typically due to ice in cold weather or dirt and grit accumulating in the lock barrel.

Both issues can usually be resolved in just a few minutes using items you likely have at home. Below are the recommended steps for each solution, along with routine maintenance tips to help prevent these problems from recurring.

Cold Weather

As with anything in extremely cold weather, bollards can sometimes have their locks frosted or iced over. It's not a major issue and can be rectified with the following:

  1. Pour some warm (not boiling) water into a small jug or cup. You will also need a dry cloth.
  2. On the top of your bollard, in particular where the locking barrel is, pour some of the water over the barrel.
  3. Quickly wipe dry the excess water to avoid refreezing.
  4. Put your key back into the lock and ‘gently’ turn it from side-to-side to free up any residual ice.

This normally works, and your barrel should pop up/unlock and begin being operational.

Dirt or Grit Build-up

You may find that sometimes the lock does not pop up. This is normally because dirt or grit has worked its way into the locking barrel. We always recommend, as does the manufacturer, spraying WD-40 into the barrel to free up and loosen the dirt. Here’s a quick guide:

  1. Spray WD-40 into the locking barrel. As much as you like, as it will not harm the lock.
  2. Then take your key and gently work loose any residual dirt that may be inside.
  3. Each time, take your key out and wipe clean with a dry cloth.
  4. Repeat as often as necessary until the lock begins to turn freely.

PLEASE NOTE: We always recommend that locks are periodically lubricated with WD-40 or equivalent. Manufacturer's guidelines are generally every 4-6 weeks. This will help maintain your bollard's locking system.

Also, it is vitally important to ensure that the small key flap is always closed over the barrel when not being opened. This will prevent dirt and grit build-up.

If none of the above works, please contact us, as we may need to send an engineer.
