What is a parking bollard?

A parking bollard is a way to secure your parking from other vehicles using your designated area.

Typically, parking bollards are a short, vertical post made of steel or plastic that is used to prevent vehicles from entering an area. The parking posts we sell at Bison Security Posts are designed for strength and durability and are made from steel.

Depending on the requirements, many of our parking solutions are locked using a padlock or require a key. Some have a locking mechanism built into the post. We find that those without a padlock are the most secure option as padlocks can be cut off.

As you can see from our collection above, some have reflective stickers for areas that are not well-lit or for high-traffic areas like apartment block courtyards.

Why install a parking post?

Most of the reasons why you should install parking posts on your property are related to security. These include:

  1. Theft: they are a physical deterrent to theft
  2. Access: they stop unauthorised access for other vehicles
  3. Protection: they protect your vehicle from other vehicles
  4. Boundaries: they make your property boundaries clear
  5. Peace of mind: they give additional security whilst you are not at your property

Are they the same as car park bollards?

Parking posts can typically be used as car park bollards.

A car park is most likely to use fold down posts, especially if it is a multi-storey car park. This is because although there is some space between the floors you may compromise the structural integrity of the car park if there is a 3-4 foot hole in the floor for a telescopic or retractable post.

Fold down posts in particular have a very simple mechanism that is easily used by the public.

How many should I install in my home parking space?

The number of parking posts you install will depend on your driveway. If you only have space for one car then one parking bollard should be enough. It will be your decision as to whether it is a retractable, telescopic or for maximum security, electric bollard.

If you have a wider driveway, then it is recommended that you allow 1.5m between each bollard. One suggestion is to install fixed parking posts with one or two retractable posts to allow access.

Automatic, telescopic or fold down?

We offer a range of automatic, telescopic, and fold-down parking bollards, each designed to meet different needs and preferences. Here’s a closer look at each type to help you make an informed decision:

  • Fold-down Bollards: The most straightforward and cost-effective solution. These bollards are hinged at the base, allowing them to fold flat to the ground. They are ideal for locations where occasional access restriction is required.
  • Telescopic Bollards: A popular choice for both residential and commercial properties. These bollards retract into the ground when not in use, providing a discreet solution. They are manually operated, typically with a key mechanism. Their key advantages are:
  • Automatic Bollards: Ideal for high-end properties or areas where convenience and control are paramount. These bollards operate electronically, rising and lowering with the push of a button. They are particularly suited for situations where frequent access changes are needed, such as in commercial spaces or private driveways with regular vehicle movement.
