With new legalisation coming soon changing how large scale venues approach security, you might find yourself wondering what is an anti-terrorism bollard and do I need one?

Why choose an anti-terrorism bollard?

Not all security posts are created equal. With an anti-terrorism bollard, you have a security post that is crash tested. This aids with HVM (hostile vehicle mitigation). Threats from vehicles can be reduced by installing an anti-terrorism bollard. These may be passive (static) or active (security-controlled).

Understanding HVM

With hostile vehicle mitigation, it is all about reducing accessibility. VAW (Vehicle as a weapon) provides danger to civilians. HVM can be done using bollards, gates and other vehicle defence street furniture. Through their use, anti-terrorism bollards can provide:

  • Total traffic exclusion from an area using security posts that are crash tested
  • Sectioning off specific areas using gates or automatic bollards
  • Protection for pedestrians but mobility for the disabled

In 2017, there were two mainstream stories of people being attacked by drivers. In March, a rental car was used to drive over pedestrians in the Westminister, killing 5 and injuring 40. Then in June, a van mounted the pavement on London Bridge, killing 8 and injuring 48 civilians. A better understanding of using HVMs has reduced the likelihood of dealing with tragic cases like this.

What are anti-terrorism bollards?

Anti-terrorism bollards or counter-terror bollards are posts crash tested and capable of stopping vehicles as big as a lorry. They can be stationary or automated, meaning they can stay upright or retract into the ground.

Their use is to stop vehicles from reaching crowded areas or penetrating buildings. Typically made from steel, either galvanised or stainless steel. Both are incredibly durable materials, with stainless steel being a little stronger. However, galvanised steel is highly customisable, which is great for making security posts more identifiable or allowing them to blend into their environment more.

Counter-terror bollards can withstand an incredible amount of fluctuation in temperature and weather. Usually, a zinc coating will reduce their likelihood of getting damaged by the rain or any water. This retains not only their functionality but appearance as well.

Below you can watch a video on how smoothly the XPASS 800 K4 Anti-Terrorism Automatic Bollard works. It can retract back into the ground when not in use but stop a 7.5 metric tonne vehicle going 30mph.

Counter-terror bollard ratings

When you search online, you might come across K4, K8 or K12 bollards. The K rating means their overall strength in relation to what vehicle speeds they can stop. The larger the number the stronger they are.

K4 rated counter-terror bollard

These anti-terrorism bollards will stop vehicles going 30mph if they weigh 6.8 metric tonnes or less. Vehicles around this size will usually be medium-sized vans. They can successfully stop heavier vehicles however they are guaranteed to stop vehicles of this size at this speed.

K8 rated counter-terror bollard

These anti-terrorism bollards will stop vehicles going 40mph if they weigh 6.8 metric tonnes or less. Vehicles around this size will usually be medium-sized vans. They can successfully stop heavier vehicles however they are guaranteed to stop vehicles of this size at this speed.

K12 rated counter-terror bollard

These anti-terrorism bollards will stop vehicles going 50mph if they weigh 6.8 metric tonnes or less. Vehicles around this size will usually be medium-sized vans. They can successfully stop heavier vehicles but are guaranteed to stop vehicles of this size at this speed.

Understanding the PAS 68 rating

The PAS 68 rating a product receives is dependent on several factors, including vehicle speed and weight. This is the UK equivalent of the K ratings. However, you will be far more likely to find the K ratings for an anti-terrorist bollard.
